Condensed history - Family

Two brothers born in Spain were separated when one left for a life in England. The remaining brother settled in Spain.

During the inquisition my great-great-grandfather was a Grand Inquisitor in Spain. That lasted until he was found out to be a Jew. Not a good thing to be in those days. So he fled Spain and joined his brother in England. Spain did not appear to have great opportunities for him.

In England, the Aguilar brothers established a bank. The bank did very well. So well that they were in a position to finance a war against either Spain or France. This was somewhere in the 15/1600's.

Somehow both brothers died and only the wives and children survived. Banking being what it was in those days, relied heavily on personal relationships and individual accounting.  When the head of the bank, most times also the head of the family died, his contacts and accounting files were lost. The family remained to fiend for itself without the ability to rely on full disclosure of past practices, contacts and accountability.

The English  government with it large amount of resources maintained an accounting system and did not forget. In the 1930's my family was contacted to reclaim the principal and interest from the loan the Brothers Aguilar Bank made to the British government. England had won the war. Principal and interest amounted to roughly 40 Million dollars at that time.

Most of my family was already living in the United States when the British government notified us that it was ready to repay the original loan plus interest.  At about the same time the British parliament passed a law terminating any government obligations for past due loans by recipients who did not make their claims within a prescribed time. Transportation being what it was in those days, by the time my family received notice and reached England by sea, the time limit had passed. Yes they took lawyers. But who was going to approve a loan repayment of that amount.

A book was written on the family called "The Family Y Aguilar." (see Inquisition above) There is reference to the family and their business in the British Museum in England.

One of the brothers had a daughter named Jenny. She was my great grandmother. Although she died when I was about six or seven years old, I still remember her. Jenny married Johanne Kringel. Johanne Krengel was a Rabbi in Ratibore Germany (Upper Silesia). He is listed in the Hebrew/Jewish Encyclopedia. Some references show him as a chief rabbi in Strasburg. His family is shown as coming from Breslau Germany. Jenny's maiden name Agular was originally De-Agular. Depending on the source, De-Agular is also spelled as Agular and Aguilar.  Some listings show the family as having been Morranos.

Jenny and Johanne lived in Germany while Johanne served as a chaplain in the German army. I heard that he was still serving in the army went Hitler took over the chancellorship. Understanding the situation Jenny and Johanne moved to the United States.

Jenny and Jahanne had a daughter Rachel. She fell in love and married another family member Harry Kringle. Harry and Rachel were second cousins. Harry had come to the United States with his parents as a child. In effect he was an American who visited family in the "old country". This enabled the Kringel family to move to the US without delay. Although they were all family the last names were spelled slightly differently. Kringle Vs Kringel.

Great grandparents, grandparents, and my mother moved into a previous luxury apartment on 112 street and Broadway in New York City. At one time the apartment has servants quarters etc. My mother met a sailor and married. I then my sister was born. While my father was away fighting, my mother sister and myself continued living with my grand parents and their parents.

By the time my father got back from the war something had gone very wrong in my parents marriage and it fell apart. My sister and I were raised by my mother and her family, never seeing my natural father or his family.

My mother was a Zionist and when I was about seven years old we moved to Israel. During the ocean voyage to Israel I was asked to pick an Israeli name. I chose "Doron" that was spelled for me with one "r". Doron with one "r" means present.

We came back to the United States after about three years because of the 1956 war in that region. My sister and I were sent ahead. My mother followed six months later with a proposal for marriage. David and Vivian were married in 1957 in Israel. Because of US immigration laws my mother returned alone, David followed about six months later.

In the United States I was confronted with using my birth name of Darryl. I preferred Doron but needed a "fit" that would not be questioned on legal papers. So I changed my name from Doron with one "r" to Dorron with two "r's". This way both Darryl and Dorron had six letters, began with a "d" and had two "r's". No one questioned the three letter change. Thereafter I was legally Dorron with two "r's".

The apartment was too crowded even though my great-grandmother had died. We moved to another past luxury apartment building on 101 street again on Broadway. I landed up sleeping in the Servants quarters as all of us tried not getting in each other way. After my grandfather died we moved to Forest Hills Queens in New York City. My grandmother lived in an apartment near the house my parents managed to purchase.
